Once upon a time, perms were considered strictly ‘80s, but they have recently made a comeback. It makes sense: after all, if you have naturally straight hair, haven’t you dreamed of having long, flowing locks? Perms are the perfect way to switch it up and try something new. If you’re looking for a perm in Tampa, come to visit our hair salon! Our stylists have a lot of experience transforming straight, flat hair into voluminous curls.
That being said, there is only so much that we can do here in the salon to ensure that your hair looks fabulous for weeks to come. There is also a fair amount of aftercare involved in maintaining a perm, and if you neglect these important steps, you can actually ruin your perm. Fortunately, we can help you here at Serenity Salon & Spa! Check out this blog post with instructions, and if you have further questions, you can always talk to your stylist.
Nourish Your Hair
Perms are damaging to hair, so it is essential to actively work to nourish your hair so it is as healthy as possible. First of all, make sure to not request any other processing treatments, as this will destroy your hair — this is not the time to get highlights. In addition, perms strip your hair of protein, so make sure to use protein rebuilding treatments. You should also make a point to invest in sulfate-free shampoo and deep moisturizing conditioner, as well as a soft paddle brush and wide-toothed, wooden comb.
Hydrate Your Hair
After a perm, your hair is going to be very dry. It is going to be practically calling out for moisture! It is essential that you prioritize deep conditioning when you have a perm. For the first few weeks after your perm, deep condition twice a week; after that, you can cut back to once a week. Your stylist can recommend a good deep conditioner for your hair needs.
If you’re a daily shampooer, now is the time to cut back. When you wash your hair, you strip it of its natural oils, drying it out. To keep your perm hydrated, don’t shampoo as often. When you do shampoo, make sure it is sulfate-free, and always condition afterward.
After you shampoo, don’t towel-dry your perm. Comb your hair with your wide-toothed comb, apply your nourishing products, and allow it to air dry. When your hair is dry, you can comb through it once again and then brush with your paddle brush. If you want to further define your curls, use a product such as a curl enhancer.
Don’t Skip Your Hair Appointment
In order for your perm to look healthy, you want to make sure you are getting regular trims. Even if you are looking to grow out your hair, it’s important to cut off the dead ends regularly. In fact, cutting off the dead parts encourages hair growth! Come in every six to eight weeks to ensure that your hair is as healthy as possible post-perm.
